No. 28: Katie Colclough
Last year's position: 50th
Katie Colclough's greatest day of the year came in Hooglede, Belgium, where she won the silver medal in the European Championships under-23 road race. The GB team was up against a very strong Dutch team, featuring Marianne Vos, but Colclough was undaunted.
The Dutch rider Chantel Black attacked and the rest of her team was policing the bunch. Colclough had already had a mechanical problem when her seat bolt snapped and had to be paced back to the bunch by Anna Blyth. And yet the rider from Grantham found the strength to attack the bunch with one lap remaining and soloed to the finish in second place, holding off the bunch sprint, which was won by Vos.
It was a great performance for the 19 year old who is a first year senior and still has three seasons at under-23 level. Great Britain look like they will be extremely strong on the road come London 2012. On the road in 2009, Colclough had 15 top ten results.
Colclough, though, could also play a part on the track. In the spring she was part of the team pursuit team that won the World Cup round at Copenhagen and was also a silver medallist in the points race in the same meeting.
