Michael Barry career profile

The son of a British road racer, Michael Barry has carved out a niche for himself as one of the hardest-working domestiques in the pro peloton.

Much more frequently seen on the front of the peloton than on the top step of the podium - he has notched up two victories in eight years as a European pro - Barry has nevertheless shown his quality on the few occasions he has ridden for himself, achieving top-ten finishes in Olympic and world championship road races.

After his breakthrough on the North American scene, he went to US Postal, notably supporting Roberto Heras and Paolo Savoldelli on the way to their respective Vuelta and Giro victories.

Moving on to Team Columbia, he has continued in a respected role as team player. However, a ride in the Tour de France has thus far eluded the classy Canadian.

Now in the autumn of his career, tall Barry will be hoping to get a ride in the sport's flagship event with his new employers, Team Sky.

He can also lay claim to being one of the more intelligent members of the pro peloton, having had two books and several New York Times articles published.
