A trust fund has been set up by members of the Manx Road Club to assist Jonny Bellis who is set to remain in hospital in London until April following serious head injuries sustained in a Scooter crash last September.

The 21 year old from Douglas continues to recover well but requires extensive physiotherapy at the Wellington Hospital, St John's Wood, a specialist centre for the treatment of head injuries, costing £10,000 per month.

Manx Road Club chairman Bill Ward said: "Everyone knows what Jonny has achieved as a bike rider and how he has been a fine ambassador for the Isle of Man and for his sport.

"But club members wanted to help Jonny because he is a lovely guy and everyone involved in cycling, from the Manx Road Club and all other clubs here, was saddened to hear of his accident.

"We are giving out sponsor forms to anyone who wants to raise money for the fund which will go towards covering the costs of his medical treatment. Everyone involved in cycling in the Isle of Man looks forward to the day when we can see Jonny back on his bike and the aim of the trust fund is make that day happen as soon as possible."

Bellis turned professional last season for Saxo Bank after a successful spell as a stagiaire with the team and is a graduate of the GB under-23 academy in Quarrata, Italy, where the accident occurred.

The Manxman became the first British male rider to win a World Championship road medal since 1967 when he took bronze in the 2007 U23 race.

Anyone wishing to help raise money for the Jonathan Bellis Trust Fund can contact Bill Ward on +44 (0)1624 825723 for a sponsor form. Check the Manx Road Club website, www.manxroadclub.com, for an upcoming printable form.

The wellington is a good hospital. I'm sure he's in good hands.

I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd wish him the very best.
