Trott takes silver medal at junior World track champs

Laura Trott claimed the silver medal in the points race at the world junior track championships in Montichiari, Italy yesterday.

It is Great Britain's first medal of the world junior track championships, bringing some silverware to a day of medal near misses.

"Laura got caught out a little bit when a German and a Spaniard took a lap about half way through the race," explained Olympic Development programme coach Darren Tudor.

"She tried chasing but nobody else was really giving a lot. Then, as those two got on, she made the break to get across and took four others with her. They got a lap coming up to the penultimate sprint."

"She didn't quite have the legs for the final sprint. The Dane [Julie Leth] won, so it was down to racing for second. Laura needed to win the last sprint - and she did."

The result comes after an opening day of the five-day championships which saw Great Britain finish just off the podium twice, placing fourth in the individual pursuit with Sam Harrison and in the men's team sprint.

"Obviously we just want to try to not have too many fourths, but in terms of what we're trying to get out of the worlds, the experience and everything, it's going really well so far," Tudor said.

"Laura was really pleased because I think she had a little bit of doubt in her mind about riding it, with the individual pursuit today obviously a big target for her."

"She said to me last night that she's really looking forward to the omnium [on Saturday and Sunday]. She'll back up quite well with what she'd done on the road this year."

This result continues 19-year-old Trott's strong run of form. Just
last week, the national junior road race champion claimed fourth in the
junior worlds time-trial, 500 kilometres south, in Offida.

Trott also has a junior European team pursuit gold medal from Minsk last year, as well as two bronze medals.

As for the team, Tudor is hopeful of more British success in the coming days. "We've got a really strong team who are all close of getting close or medalling. None of them are here to make up the numbers."
