Shane Sutton appointed OBE by Her Majesty the Queen

British Cycling performance manager Shane Sutton was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) by Her Majesty the Queen at Buckingham Palace on Tuesday.

Sutton was recognised for his key role in the success of the Great Britain cycling squad since joining them in 2002, where he has acted as coach and mentor to a succession of British cyclists.

"It is a huge honour and privilege to be here today which I owe entirely to the brilliant work and commitment of the riders, the coaching team and the support staff around me," said Sutton. "This accolade is not about personal achievement but that of the whole GB Cycling Team."

In December 2008, Sutton was awarded 'Coach of the Year' at the UK Coaching Awards after the resounding success of Team GB cyclists at the Beijing Olympics.

A gold medallist in the team pursuit at the Commonwealth Games in 1978, he moved to Britain in the early 1980s from Australia and raced as a professional for a clutch of domestic teams, including PMS and Banana-Falcon. In 1987 he rode a couple of weeks of the Tour de France for ANC-Halfords. His biggest win was the 1990 Milk Race.
