CW's Top British Riders of 2010: No. 27
Number 27: Sharon Laws
Last year's position: N/A
Considering the amount of work Sharon Laws does for her team-mates, it was fitting that she got a chance to enjoy a couple of days in the spotlight.
Think back to April and all the work the Cervélo riders did to help set up Emma Pooley for her victory on the Mur de Huy at Flèche Wallonne. Laws was one of those who kept the pace high on the approach and at the bottom - yet she still had the strength left to finish 11th.
In May Laws won a small race, the Berner Rundfahrt, in Switzerland, beating her breakaway companion Polona Batagelj. She then worked tirelessly for Pooley, who won the Tour de l'Aude.
But Laws's own moment to savour came at the Tour de l'Ardeche in September. What a win it was too. On a grimy day she attacked with the Aussie Vicki Whitelaw and opened up a very healthy gap. At the finish, Laws pipped her rival by the narrowest of margins to win the stage and take the yellow jersey. The gap back to third place was 1-41. Although she lost the jersey in the following day's time trial she was well in contention on every stage and ended the race second overall, just four seconds back.
Laws was also fourth in both the national road race and time trial championships and at the World Championships she rode extremely strongly to help her two team-mates Pooley and Nicole Cooke.
