Dundee Cyclists' Calendar in aid of paralysed rider
Dundee Cyclists Calendar cover 2011
Dundee cyclist Steve Donnelly's life changed forever as the result of a seemingly innocuous crash whilst on a Dundee Wheelers club run in June 2010.
It's the accident that all cyclists fear. Donnelly's back wheel slipped out on a corner, sending him crashing to the ground. Instead of picking himself up and dusting himself down, Donnelly remained motionless.
After being airlifted to hospital it was discovered that Donnelly, 62, had severed his spinal cord, and faced a life of paralysis from the neck down and is likely to stay in Southern General Hospital, Glasgow, for a further year.
Donnelly's clubmates and those from neighbouring Dundee Thistle Road Club have created a Dundee Cyclists' Calendar for 2011 in the hope of raising funds to give Donnelly a better and more comfortable life, and ultimately adapt his home when he leaves hospital.
The calendar includes a mixture of images of Dundee cyclists in action, plus some more racy images of scantily clad riders. It's a bit of fun for a very serious and worthy cause.
Donnelly's Dundee Wheeler's club-mate Sandy MacGregor paid tribute to reaction to the project: "We've been really touched by the response from local cyclists, it shows that the cycling community really does come together to respond to something like this."
"To be honest, the club is struggling to regain morale since Steve's accident. He finds it hard to do even simple things, like if a song he doesn't like comes on his iPod, he can't change it to another one and has to call a nurse for help."
David Martin was responsible for the photographic content of the calendar - and also appears in December's image as Father Christmas. "I was asked by one of Steve's club mates, Sheila Fettes, who had the initial idea and together we came up with a set of images to photograph, twisted a few arms," Martin told Cycling Weekly.
"You'd be surprised how quickly some people want to get naked in front of a camera, and with a bit of effort and freezing our **** in the snow and ice, came up with the images."
"October is Kevin Stewart, a Dundee track sprinter who represented Scotland in Delhi. For the December photo we dragged a tandem and the camera gear up the hill through two feet of snow, managed to stop everything blowing over in the wind and just about got the pics."
The full-colour, A4 wire bound calendar is available for £10 plus £2.50 postage from Dundee Thistle RC website. The calendars will be dispatched at the beginning of January.
