Welsh sprinter Becky James scored a bronze medal in the keirin at the Beijing round of the UCI Track World Cup on Sunday, giving Britain its third medal of the event.

James worked her way through the rounds to reach the final six, and placed third behind France's Clara Sanchez and Ukrainian Lyubov Shulika.

Britain's Peter Mitchell narrowly missed out on a bronze medal after reaching the third/fourth place final of the men's sprint. In the event, he was beaten by China's Miao Zhang, but it was another strong performance by a young British rider. France's Kevin Sireau beat German Sebastian Doehrer to take gold.

Lizzie Armitstead finished fifth in the women's omnium, a position boosted by her win in the points race round. Canadian Tara Whitten won, with Dutch woman Kirsten Wild securing silver.

In other events, Britain's Jonathan Mould placed 11th in the men's points race won by Artur Ershov of Russia, and World Cup debutant Philip Hindes rode to 22nd spot in the men's kilometre time trial behind winner Francois Pervis (France).

James's bronze can be added to Great Britain's bronze in the team pursuit and the gold scored by Sam Harrison in the men's omnium in China.

The next round of the UCI Track World Cup takes place in Manchester on February 18-20, 2011.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
