Tour of Qatar 2011

The Tour of Qatar, starting on Sunday, February 6, offers a relatively easy warm-up for Classics riders to refamiliarise themselves with whipping cross winds and nervous bunch racing, and test their form.

A total of 16 teams with eight riders per squad will line up for the six-day, UCI 2.1-ranked race. The teams are a mixture of Proteam and Professional Continental-level squads.

Britain is well represented at the race with ten riders from four teams: Mark Cavendish (HTC-Highroad), Russell Downing (Team Sky), Alex Dowsett (Team Sky), Bradley Wiggins (Team Sky), Jeremy Hunt (Team Sky), Ian Stannard (Team Sky), Roger Hammond (Garmin-Cervelo), Daniel Lloyd (Garmin-Cervelo), Mark McNally (An Post-Sean Kelly) and Andrew Fenn (An Post-Sean Kelly).

Cavendish, Hammond, Hunt and Downing will be gunning for stage wins in the bunch sprints up against the likes of three-time Qatar winner Tom Boonen (Quick Step), Francesco Chicchi (Quick Step), Theo Bos (Rabobank), Heinrich Haussler (Garmin-Cervelo) and Mark Renshaw (HTC-Highroad).

Last year Belgian Wouter Mol (Vacansoleil) took a surprise overall win after getting into a successful escape on stage two with stage winner Geert Steurs (Topsport Vlaanderen-Mercator). The fragmented bunch couldn't bring the race back together in the crosswinds and Mol went on to defend his lead until the race's conclusion.

Mol is not back to defend his title in 2011 as his Vacansoleil team aren't on the start list.

Former Associate Editor

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
