Tour de France 1988 King of the Mountains Steven Rooks will be taking part in the BeOne Forest of Dean Classic cyclo-sportive on Sunday, May 1.

The Dutch former professional, now 50, will join 1,000 participants of the 89-mile ride that starts in Monmouth, South Wales and follows a route through Tintern, Symonds Yat and the Forest of Dean.

Along with taking the KoM jersey in the 1988 Tour, Rooks finished runner-up in the overall classification and won the stage to Alpe d'Huez. The following year, he took the mountain time trial stage of the race and finished seventh overall.

Alongside his Tour credentials, Rooks also has wins at Liege-Bastogne-Liege and Amstel Gold Race in his palmares that stretch from 1983 to 1994.

Entries are still available for the sportive, costing £27. You can find out more at www.wheelsinwheels.com

Good luck trying to "ride with Rooks" if you're participating in that ride. I was reading the other day about someone who had been riding with him (i'm sure it was not on here?) and 17 years after retiring apparently he's still damn fast.
