Cavendish makes Manchester track return at Revolution

Mark Cavendish, 2011 World Champion

Road race word champion Mark Cavendish will make his first competitive appearance at the Manchester velodrome since 2009 at the Revolution track meeting on Saturday, November 19.

"Mark raced Revolution regularly in the early years, so it is fantastic to welcome him back as the World Road Race Champion," said James Pope of Revolution organisers Face Partnership.

"After such a fantastic year on the road, the Revolution crowd are going to provide a hero's welcome to Cav so it will be a special evening."

Cavendish has often attributed his blistering sprint speed to years of track racing - he was crowned Madison world champion with Rob Hayles back in 2005 and again in 2008 with Bradley Wiggins.

Cavendish will not have an easy ride in the second round of the 2011-12 Revolution series. Olympic track champion Geraint Thomas will be there as part of Team Sky alongside Alex Dowsett and Peter Kennaugh, both of whom took an active part in the opening Revolution round.

European omnium champion and Olympic champion Ed Clancy will take par in Rapha-Condor-Sharp's team alongside Andy Tennant. Magnus Backstedt also makes a return to the track, racing with his UK Youth team-mate Steven Burke.

International talent comes courtesy of track stalwarts Franco Marvulli and Iljo Keisse, the latter of which recently won in the Amsterdam and Grenoble six day races.

Selected tickets are still available for the event via the Revolution website.

Television highlights of the racing will be shown on British digital channel ITV4 at 7pm on Monday November 21.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
