CW's British performances of 2011: No. 19
Dave Le Grys
Number 19: David Le Grys wins the World Masters 500m time trial (age 55-59)
Refusing to acknowledge when they are beaten, even if they are bloodied and battered, is what sets winners apart from the rest.
This year, David Le Grys defied the doctors to win his 21st World Masters title.
Le Grys had a very bad crash while riding a points race in Portugal last year and was in intensive care with a collapsed lung and internal injuries.
His recovery was slow, forcing him to miss the National Masters Track Championships in June as well as the Euros in August.
Doctors and physios were unanimous in telling him to forget the idea of defending the 500-metre time trial title he won at the World Masters in 2010.
But on October 12, not only was he on the start line in Manchester, he won the gold medal, ahead of the Australia's David Willmott, the current holder of the world's best time in that age group.
