CW's British performances of 2011: No. 13
Emma Pooley, World Champs TT 2011
Number 13: Emma Pooley wins a medal on a flat Copenhagen Worlds TT course
A quick look at the profile for the time trial course at the World Championships suggested that Emma Pooley's defence of her rainbow jersey would probably be only a token one.
On a flat circuit, against the powerful specialists it was presumed Pooley would struggle.
That was not the case. Pooley produced a ride that was every bit as impressive as the one that earned her the rainbow jersey in the first place.
She was just 24 seconds behind the German, Judith Arndt, and only a couple of seconds off a silver medal.
Pooley is thought of as a climber because of the way she can ride away from people on the hills and in the mountains. But she is also a specialist at long breakaways on less extreme terrain.
But the result has given fresh hope that she might be able to win a medal in the time trial in London next summer despite the fact the course is quite flat.
