Hamilton to officially lose 2004 Olympic gold
American Tyler Hamilton will be stripped of his 2004 Olympic Games time trial gold medal after admitting to doping during his career.
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) will announce on Friday that it has stripped Hamilton of the title, and will award it to former silver medallist Viatcheslav Ekimov, according to a report filed by the Associated Press.
American Bobby Julich will move up to silver medal position, with Michael Rogers of Australia gaining bronze. The move comes before the IOC's eight-year statute of limitations expires at the end of August.
Hamilton failed a test for homologous blood transfusion at the 2004 Vuelta a Espana whilst riding for Phonak, the same year that he won the Oympic TT title.
At the time, Hamilton claimed complete innocence but came clean in May 2011 when he admitted to doping during his professional cycling career during an American television interview.
