Katusha registered as Pro Continental by UCI
Russian team Katusha has been registered as a Professional Continental-level team for 2013 after it failed to meet the Union Cycliste Internationale's criteria for a WorldTour licence.
The UCI said in a statement that Katusha had "introduced anti-doping measures that have prompted the Licences Commission to grant it registration as UCI Professional Continental Team" after failing to gain a ProTeam, WorldTour licence for 2013.
Although being registered in the UCI's second division means that Katusha does not qualify for automatic entry into WorldTour races, it does mean they have a chance of wildcard selection. However, when Giro d'Italia organiser RCS Sport announced the wildcard entries for this year's race, Katusha were not on the list.
The team has said that it will continue to fight for a WorldTour licence and has filed an appeal against the UCI decision with Court of Arbitration for Sport.
