Mark Cavendish wins Giro d'Italia 2013 stage one

We keep track of British riders' professional road victories throughout the 2013 cycling season on this page.

We'll include individual road race and time trial wins from both men and women in international races with a UCI ranking.

Mark Cavendish opened the year with a win in his first race for Omega Pharma-QuickStep - the first stage of the Tour de San Luis in Argentina on January 22. The following day, Geraint Thomas (Sky) put in an attack at the end of stage two of the Tour Down Under in Australia to net the stage win and put himself in the race lead.

Cavendish scored his second win of the year in the third stage of the Tour of Qatar in February, followed swiftly by wins on stage four and five. Chris Froome (Sky) put in a strong performance in the Tour of Oman to win the key stage on Green Mountain and take the overall win.

Froome continued his winning run into March, taking a stage of Tirreno-Adriatcio (where he placed second overall) and then a stage win and overall victory in Criterium International. Kit Gilham (Metaltek-Knights of Old) won stage four of the Tour of Algeria mid-March. Cavendish scored his first win of March with stage two in the Three Days of De Panne.

The first half of April was a lean month for British riders, who collectively failed to make an impression in the spring classics. Froome then won the Tour de Romandie overall, including a win in the opening prologue.

In May, Cavendish took the first Grand Tour stage of the season, winning the Giro d'Italia opener in Naples on May 4. He followed this with wins on stages six, 12 and 13. Alex Dowsett then claimed the biggest victory of his career, winning the tough stage eight time trial. Lucy Garner took her first professional win, taking the opening stage of the Tour of Chongming Island.

In 2012, British riders amassed a total of 68 pro road wins.
