Giro d'Italia 2013: Stage 3 preview
Giro d'Italia 2013: Stage 3
When: Monday, May 6
To: Marina di Ascea
Category: Medium mountains
With the Grand Départ in Naples, the Campania region pulled off a coup of three stages. By the third day, the riders might be getting used to the passionate tifosi.
The Giro is paying back the fans who cried out last year when the race started in Denmark, and barely made its way to Italia Meridionale.
This stage will highlight the beautiful region, with a leg along Sorrento Peninsula, passing the Amalfi coast and into Cilento.
Lance Armstrong overcooked a bend on the technical Amalfi Coast run in 2009 when the race wove its way to Vesuvius.
The race heads in the opposite direction this year. It climbs inland from the Gulf of Salerno for its first two serious ascents. The second, up Sella di Catona, should ensure all sprinters are shelled and the pink jersey sees a fresh face in Ascea.
Some of Italy's most stunning coastline is found between Sorrento and Ascea. It's worth spending some time in the towns on the steep cliff-sides by day and sipping limoncello by night. The ancient Greek town Velia and theatre ruins sit inland from Ascea.
