WHERE ARE WE?
Vaison-la-Romaine is a town beloved of cycling photographers - and it's easy to see why, with the peloton passing the Roman ruins that adorn the banks of the river during the Critérium du Dauphiné.
The finish town, Gap, is just as picturesque. Located in the heart of the Alps, and surrounded by storied climbs, it has regularly featured on the Tour route. Unfortunately it boasts only one road. Since the stage always finishes in the town centre, the resultant traffic jam is often epic in duration.
WHAT'S ON THE ROUTE?
The riders are in the middle mountains, and there are several smaller climbs today. The organisers have spared the peloton the harder climbs in the region, but there are enough to prevent a bunch sprint.
WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN?
Don't expect fireworks from the GC riders today - they've got the four most crucial days of the Tour de France starting on Wednesday, which means they'll sit back, relax, and let a break win by about seven minutes.
Likewise, the sprinters haven't got a hope today, given the terrain, so they'll do much the same. The only question is, who's going to be in the break, and who's going to win from it? From our position several weeks out from the Tour, we'll say Pierrick Fédrigo. He excels at stages like this.
