Cyclist dies after Abergavenny road race crash
Cardiff Ajax CC confirmed this afternoon that club member Ben Carroll has passed away following injuries sustained in last night's Abergavenny Handicap Road Race in Monmouthshire, Wales.
As reported earlier, a rider was in a critical condition following a serious road traffic collision with a van on the Old Raglan Road (A40) between the Steelhorse Cafe and the Hardwick Roundabout just outside of Abergavenny at 8.50pm yesterday.
The collision occurred as the cyclists were riding towards the Abergavenny area and the van was travelling in the opposite direction.
A statement released on club's website this afternoon read: "It is with great sadness that the Club informs that Ben Carroll was killed in an incident in the Abergavenny Handicap Race last night. Our condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Ben's family and friends. We would greatly appreciate it if there could be no speculation about this tragic incident and allow the Police, Welsh Cycling and the race organisers the opportunity to investigate the matter. More news will be given as appropriate. Thank you for your understanding."
Gwent Police this morning confirmed that two riders were involved in the incident, with a 33-year-old male cyclist from Abertillery receiving minor injuries.
Their investigation into the incident is ongoing, and they are appealing for anyone with information to come forward by contacting them on 101 (quote log number 576 9/7/13).
This incident comes just over four months after Herbalife-LeisureLakesBikes rider Junior Heffernan was killed during the Severn Bridge Road Race in Gloucestershire.
