Tour de France Bike: David Millar's Cervélo S5
David Millar's Tour de France Cervelo S5
One of the original aero designs, this frame shares some of its tube shapes and wind cheating features with the P5 time trial bike - perfect for a lone breakaway specialist. Although at 36 Millar is in the twilight of his career, still expect to see him and this bike off the front of the bunch...
Celebrating its third anniversary of being David Millar's bike at Le Tour, the S5 still looks sharp, thanks in part to its smart new livery to mark the 100th Tour de France.
While we've been subjected to some garish renditions of the argyle that's become synonymous with Jonathan Vaughters's team, we're particularly taken by this year's subtle inclusion of it on the ‘Cervélo' decal on the down tube and fork inners. This particular rendition would, no doubt, have also had a smattering of yellow if Millar hadn't narrowly missed wearing the jersey after stage four's team time trial.
As one of the pioneers of aero bike design, unsurprisingly the Cervélo S5 ticks all the aero boxes with tubing as narrow and deep as the UCI's 3:1 ‘aspect ratio' rule will allow, and the rear brake is tucked away behind the seatstays. Unlike the other S5s we've seen, Millar's looked particularly long and low - could this be a custom version?
While many of the teams are running complete groupsets, Garmin-Sharp use a mix of Shimano Dura-Ace 9000 Di2 and the ovalised Rotor rings and Flow cranks that were originally designed for time trials, with the cockpit a 3T ARX Team bar/stem combo. Catching up with Millar's bike before a predicted windy sprint day, he had a pair of Mavic Cosmic Carbone Ultimates on it.
Love Millar's bike? You'll be pleased to know that if you're quick you can buy one of Garmin-Sharp's limited edition S5 Team LEs for a cool $7,500.
