There were 10 riders within 30 seconds of the race lead at the start of the day. On the most mountainous stage of the race - over 4,000 meters of climbing - it wasn't going to finish like that. Sure enough, there was a shake-up, provoked by a bold ride from new race leader Christophe Riblon of Ag2r La Mondiale.

Riblon, a French national hero after his Tour de France heroics on Alpe d'Huez, already had a stage at the Tour of Poland (at the summit of the Pordoi) is the new race leader with only the time trial stage remaining. After coming second behind Darwin Atapuma (Colombia) in the ski resort of Bukowina Tatrzanska, the Frenchman took the race lead with a ride that exemplified 'panache.'
