Laura Trott ends Manchester World Cup on a golden note

Laura Trott, Manchester Track World Cup 2013, day three

Laura Trott took a hard-fought victory in the women's omnium at the Manchester round of the UCI Track World Cup on Sunday, adding another gold medal to Saturday's team pursuit win.

Trott went into the final day of the six-discipline omnium in sixth overall, having placed a conservative sixth in Saturday's opening flying lap, seventh in the points race and runner-up in the elimination.

Sunday was different all together, with Trott placing second in the individual pursuit and then winning the scratch race by taking a lap, and cruising to win the 500m time trial. Canadian Gillian Carleton took silver, with Frenchwoman Laurie Berthon taking bronze.

Trott thanked the Manchester spectators after her victory: "You only need to listen to the crowd to understand that you're fast. On the 500 metres, they really helped me out, I won it for them!" she said.

Becky James landed a silver medal in the women's keirin behind seemingly unstoppable German Kristina Vogel, who took her third gold of the event after the sprint and team sprint.

Germany dominated the sprint events, with Robert Forstemann taking the men's sprint to go with his existing gold in the team sprint. Forstemann and his legendary thighs dispensed Njisane Phillip (Trinidad) in the final. Australian Shane Perkins won the bronze medal ride-off with Matt Crampton, who placed just off the podium in fourth. British hope Jason Kenny failed to qualify.

Canadian Laura Brown won the women's points race, and Andreas Muller (Austria) took the men's scratch race ahead of Italian Elia Viviani with Britain's Jon Mould riding for Welsh team USN coming home for a highly-creditable bronze.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
