Lieuwe Westra wins Tour of California opener

Tour of California

Lieuwe Westra (Vacansoleil-DCM) kicked off his Tour of California campaign with the perfect start - winning the opening stage in Escondido from a late attack.

Westra had escaped in the stage's final five kilometres with Francisco Mancebo (5 Hour Energy) and easily beat his companion to the line to take the victory.

Peter Sagan (Cannondale) led the peloton home at six seconds to take third.

With temperatures nudging 40 degrees celcius and the stage featuring an ascent and descent of Palomar Mountain, the opening day of the tour presented quite a challenge.

A four-man escape group had ben given up to 12 minutes lead up and over Palomar before the WorldTour squads wound up the pace and the catch was made with just five kilometres to the line, when first Michael Rogers (Sax-Tinkoff), and then Westra and Mancebo put in late attacks.

On Monday, the riders face stage two from Murietta to Greater Palm Springs over 200km, including a mid-stage ascent of Idyllwild mountain and a summit finish.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
