Sleek aero bike for Cavendish's lead out man

After two seasons leading out Mark Cavendish at Etixx-Quick Step, Mark Renshaw has followed the Manxman across to Dimension Data for the 2016 season, meaning both will be aboard new bikes this year. For the vast majority of races we’d expect that bike to be the Cervelo S5, the aero bike at the top of the Cervelo range.

The bike, which we reviewed last year, has all the hallmarks that are typically associated with aero bikes. The most most obvious of these on the S5 is the cutout seat tube which sits snug against the rear tyre giving only minimal clearance between the tyre and the frame.

Things are a little less tight at the front, where despite the down tube joining the head tube slightly lower than on most bikes, there is still plenty of clearance to the front wheel. The other aero features of note are the elongated aerofoil tube shapes, and the seatstays which have been specially shaped to divert air around the rear brake calipers.

Renshaw and the rest of the Dimension Data squad are currently using Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 shifting combined with a Rotor chainset. Rotor revealed its own hydraulic groupset last year, and although the team has been using this in training, it is clearly not quite race-ready just yet. However Renshaw is staying loyal to with his testing of a prototype of the new Rotor 2INpower power meter.

The Enve SES 6.7 wheels are the perfect choice for the hard, fast racing of the first WorldTour race of the year. Interestingly, the front wheel has a wider internal width than the front wheel (18.5mm compared to 16.5mm), with Renshaw opting for 25mm Continental Competition tubular tyres at both ends.

The Cervelo S5 that you can buy in the shops comes with Cervelo’s own aerodynamic handlebars, but Dimension Data’s deal with Enve sees Renshaw using the American company’s stem, bars and even its Garmin mount. The bars are then wrapped with Lizard Skins handlebar tape.

Final touches are provided by a Fizik Aliante R1 braided saddle, Speedplay pedals, and Tacx bottle cages and bidons.
