It’s been a week for new kit announcements by pro teams, as well as clothing for the rest of us to get us through the winter.
Pro clothing news
Last week was the week for pro teams to unveil their new clothing which they’ll be wearing for the 2017 season.
Sky showed off their new Castelli kit. It’s still black and blue, but comes with Morse code emblazoned across its back and front. Apparently, this represents the team’s victories: the long lines are multi-day races and the dots are one day victories. Look out for the innovations that Sky says Castelli has in the pipeline for it during the season.
Castelli used to clothe Cannondale-Drapac, but terminated that deal a year early to get into bed with Sky. So Cannondale-Drapac were out at the Rouleur Classic in kit from their new supplier, POC. It retains the light green of last year’s kit and the argyle accents. And of course it now matches the team’s helmets too.
Meanwhile Movistar also showed evolution rather than revolution with their new kit. This is still made by Scottish company Endura. The Movistar M has lost its 3D effect while the Spanish mobile phone company’s name has disappeared from the front of the jersey although it’s still on the shorts. Endura has also honed the kit’s aerodynamics following time spent in the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 wind tunnel.
And pro-level wheels
We’ve also covered Zipp’s launch of its latest 454 NSW wheels. Apparently their design was inspired by whales and Zipp says – guess what – that they’re its fastest wheels ever. They also improve performance in a crosswind, Zipp says. At £3500 a set we hope that Katusha appreciates their marginal gains.
New clothing for mortals
It’s getting ever-colder out there and Vulpine has released its final instalment of its new clothing range, with the Luxury Winter collection of jackets and merino wool garments.
Proviz has launched its new super-reflective Reflect 360 helmet, which has microscopic reflective beads embedded in the shell. Retailing at £79.00, it also includes two LED lights for increased rear visibility.
And new company Python Performance is aiming to raise funds via Kickstarter to bring to market its clothing, which it says combines the advantages of compression and kinesiology tape to offer performance improvements and injury prevention.
