Adam Kenway sliced almost five seconds off the old course record in Matlock CC’s climb of Riber on Sunday, leading a one-two for Team Zenith and underlining his form one week ahead of the National Championships.
The 27-year-old from Belper clocked 3-24.1 to take 4-9 seconds off David Clarkes’ old record for the 1.196-kilometre climb, and secure victory on the day from his team-mate Joseph Clark by an impressive 9.6 seconds.
Lee Baldwin took third, the Champion System rider leaving former national champion Matt Clinton to finish just outside the podium in fourth.
Later that day in Derbyshire, the second stage of the Matlock CC promotion took the riders to the nearby Bank Road climb. A shorter, 700-yard climb, Kenway took the win again with 1-46.6, but was just 0.2 seconds quicker than runner-up Baldwin, with Clark third.
Further south, defending national champion Tejvan Pettinger completed his preparations for the title race in Yorkshire next Sunday by winning the Bristol South CC climb of Burrington Combe.
Just short of two miles, the climb was mastered by Pettinger in 6-57.8 – good enough for victory by a whopping 40 seconds, but still almost seven seconds slower than his own course record.
Ben Davis (BH Solidor) took second, with Joe Norledge (Procycling Magazine) third. Julie Marazzi (Somer Valley CC) was quickest woman up the climb.

The previous day, Norledge had secured victory in the Team Tor 2000’s 2km climb near Priddy in Somerset. He clocked 5-48.6 to win by 3.2 seconds from Charles Coleman (Felt Colbornes) with Glyndwr Griffiths (Arctic Tacx) third.
While he had to settle for the minor placings in the Matlock CC events, Matt Clinton tasted victory in Sunday’s Chesterfield Coureurs climb of Beeley Moor. The 29-year-old clocked 8-17.5 to win by almost a minute from Peak RC veteran Chris Myhill.
In Lancashire, John Findley (Bikk Nickson Cycles) enjoyed a double winning weekend with victory in the Nelson Wheelers climb at Barley on Saturday, and in Sunday’s North Lancashire RC climb on the Nick O’Pendle.
Findley took the win with 3-50.0 on Saturday, 6.8 seconds quicker than Lee Carter (Ribble Valley CRC). And then on Sunday he clocked 4-08.8 to win by six seconds from Adam Hartley (Velocity WD40).
Junior ace Kieran Savage (Jackpot Racing) was fastest in the Huddersfield Road Club climb on Ripponden Bank. Despite blustery conditions the youngster clocked 3-45.8 for the 1,320 yard climb in West Yorkshire, and was fastest by 3.2 seconds from Sam Ward (PH Mas Cycling).
And in the Yorkshire Road Club event on Cragg Vale, Henry King (Ilkley CC) took victory with 18-53.3, 40 seconds quicker than runner-up Carl Saint (Yorkshire RC).
