David McGowan says he has criterium riding to thank for his first victory of this season’s CDNW Road Race League after outsprinting rival Simon Wilson to take victory in Lancashire.
The 33-year-old Metaltek-Kuota rider broke away early on with Wilson before Champion System’s Martyn Gordon joined them.
But as the final lap approached and with the bunch gaining, it turned into a shootout between Wilson and McGowan. McGowan just got the upper hand, crossing the line a split second before Wilson. Gordon finished third.
Another rider who had to sprint for the finish was Gary Hand as the KTM road-and-trail.com man came through a five-man battle to place first in the David Bell Memorial Road Race in Falkirk on Sunday.
Hand was part of a ten-man break which was whittled down to five with just a couple of miles remaining. It was Hand that got the upper hand with Glasgow Wheelers’ Andrew Whitehall in second and NFTO’s James McCallum in third.
The annual Redhill CC open road race suffered a number of problems but was still an enjoyable race on the whole, especially for Guernsey Velo rider James Roe who finished first.
A number of riders took to Twitter after the race to post pictures of punctured tyres, seemingly caused by drawing pins being thrown onto the road a mile from the finish line. There is also some doubt over the results, with second place still being finalised.

In Hampshire, Michael Smith (Cycleworks) took victory in round one of the VC Venta Summer Criteriums in Winchester on Sunday, while Harriet Owen (Matrix Fitness-Vulpine) was victorious in the women’s race.
In Yorkshire, the Nige Moore Memorial Road Race in Thornton, West Yorkshire was won by Huddersfield Star Wheelers rider Michael Harris who took a solo victory.
Billy Harding of Orange Monkey Pro Team was second, 30 seconds down on Harris, and Timothy Mansfield was third.
Also in Yorkshire, Jamie Sharp showed he’s a man in form with yet another win, this time in the Clifton CC Road Race in Sheriff Hutton.
The York Cycleworks rider made a well-timed dash for the line to get the better of his closest rivals – Adept Precision RT’s Charlie Tanfield and Clifton’s own Robert Pape.
Falkirk was the scene for another closely-fought affair on Saturday as Peter Anderson emerged victorious from the Battle of Black Loch.
The Rigmar Racer came through a tough sprint to beat Ross Dymock of Glasgow Green Cycle Club and Lewis Mulholland of Glasgow Cycle Team to the line.
In the Portsmouth North End Summer Road Race, it was Ben Luckwell who took first place from Ben Simmons and Jack Mattock. The Ride24/7 member was dominant, winning by 1:40.
