Matt Bottrill chalks up victory number 27 for 2013

Matt Bottrill, 2nd, National 25-mile time trial championships 2013

Prolific time trial ace Matt Bottrill secured victory number 27 for the season - and broke another course record - with victory in the VTTA 25 in Nottinghamshire on Saturday.

The Drag2Zero.com rider took the win on the Flintham and Stragglethorpe course by more than two minutes to continue his form and set him up for the final round of the National Time Trial Series next Saturday.

Bottrill clocked 47-52 to win by 2-21 from Matt Sinclair (Lutterworth Cycle Centre), while third-placed Adam Gascoigne (Pedal Power) was another 47 seconds slower.

"I've backed right off the training over the last couple of weeks," said Bottrill after his latest win. "I'm winding down for the season, but today I felt fresh."

Elsewhere, Bottrill's arch rival Michael Hutchinson (In Gear-Quickvit RT) was fastest in the Team Swift 10 on the superfast V718 in East Yorkshire.

Hutch covered the South Cave course in 18-01 on an average day for conditions, giving him victory by 59 seconds over James Perkins (Team Zenith), while Andy Jackson was third, the Team Swift rider clocking 19-06.

Also notching up a fast time - albeit on a slower course - was Newmarket C&TC rider Matt Smith who won the Eastern Counties CA 10 at Six Mile Bottom in Cambridgeshire.

He won with a time of 19-53, giving him the win by 24 seconds over Catford CC's James Walsby, while Gary Record (West Kent RC) was third.

In hill-climbing, reigning national hill-climb champion Jack Pullar (Madison Genesis) took victory in the Lancaster CC event up the Jubilee Towers climb.

Three current national champions chose to ride the event, with Pullar being joined by female champ Lynne Hamel (Herbalife) as well as last year's junior female, Eve Dixon (Maxgear).

Now in the senior ranks, Dixon had to settle for second behind Hamel in the women's race.

24-year-old Pullar clocked 7-03.7 for the 1.75-mile climb, taking the win by just 5-3sec from Hope Factory Racing rival James Gullen.

Hetton Hawks junior rider Luke Mullen proved fastest in GS Metro's hill-climb at Hedley on the Hill in Northumberland.

He covered the 1.1-mile climb in 4-22.0 to win by 13 seconds from Ian Taylor (Ciclostablanca.com), while Jonathan Bayley (Gosforth RC) was third, another 12 seconds off the pace.

Mullen went home with the junior prize while Taylor won the senior's 1st prize.

And in Scotland, junior Kieran Robbins (East Sutherland CC) was quickest in the Dores hill-climb organised by Moray Firth CC in the Highlands village.

The 16-year-old clocked 10-30 for the 2.2-mile climb, five seconds quicker than runner-up Gregor Grant, who at 56 is 40 years the senior of winner Robbins.

In other time trial action, Paul Edwards and Scott Westwood (Walsall Roads CC) won the Birkenhead Victoria CC two-up 10 near Chester.

They notched up a time of 19-56 to win by 21 seconds from Leigh Premier RC duo Nathan and Mark Turnbull.

In the Seamons CC 25, Simon Bridge (Manchester Wheelers) continued his rich vein of form with a winning time of 52-43, exactly a minute quicker than his closest rival Joe Evans (Hargroves Cycles).
