Lou Bates (Velochils Interbike) and Adam Kenway (Metaltek-Kuota) were crowned the respective women’s and men’s 2016 British Hill-Climb National Champions on Sunday, after tackling the gruelling Bank Road course in the centre of Matlock, Derbyshire.

Bates set a new women’s course record in her run, posting the only women’s time of the day beneath three minutes.

Becky Lewis (Wrexham RC) finished in second place, with Joanne Clay (TORQ Performance) in third to complete the women’s podium.

Kenway’s ride was notable as he nearly didn’t ride at all, having been hospitalised just nine days previously after being hit by a car. Prior to that incident, he had been enjoying a highly successful hill-climb season, having taken nine hill-climb victories in the weeks leading up to the national championships.

Kenway finished two seconds clear of second-placed Isaac Mundy (Oxford University CC), with James Lowden (Team ASL360) in third.

The course runs at a distance of half a mile, with an average gradient of 14 per cent although some sections hit 20 per cent.

As it usual for British hill-climbs, there was a large crowd of spectators lining the road to give very vocal support to all of the riders taking on the championships.
