Argos-Shimano, Cofidis, Saur-Sojasun and Europcar in Tour de France

Team Argos-Shimano 2012

Dutch squad Argos-Shimano and French teams Europcar, Cofidis and Saur-Sojasun have all been handed wildcard entries to this year's Tour de France.

Tour organiser Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) confirmed on Friday that the four squads would be joining the 18 WorldTour squads in the race to bring the total to 22.

Argos-Shimano's entry into the Tour sets up the prospect of its sprint talent Marcel Kittel coming up against Mark Cavendish in the bunch finishes.

The 2012 Tour de France starts in Liege, Belgium, on Saturday June 30 and concludes three weeks later on Sunday July 22 in Paris.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
