Peter Kennaugh wins Tour of Austria
Peter Kennaugh successfully defends lead in Tour of Austria throughout week to take overall win
Whilst Team Sky has been suffering mixed fortunes in the Tour de France, Peter Kennaugh has won the general classification in the Tour of Austria.
Kennaugh took the victory on stage one, and successfully defended the race lead until the UCI 2.HC-ranked event's finale on Sunday.
The Manxman finished the race one minute and three seconds ahead of Janier Moreno (Movistar) overall, with Damiano Caruso (Connondale) in third at 1-42.
Marco Haller (Katusha) took the final stage win ahead of Astana's Jacopo Guarnieri and Garmin-Sharp's Raymond Kreder.
It's Kennaugh's second stage race win this season after he won the Settimana Coppi e Bartali in March. He was forced to miss the Giro d'Italia due to illness, but came back to win the British road race national title at the end of June.
Kennaugh's form in Austria raises the question as to why he was passed over for Sky's line-up in the Tour de France. Whatever the reason, a win in the tough race has significantly bolstered his growing list of victories.

Nigel Wynn worked as associate editor on CyclingWeekly.com, he worked almost single-handedly on the Cycling Weekly website in its early days. His passion for cycling, his writing and his creativity, as well as his hard work and dedication, were the original driving force behind the website’s success. Without him, CyclingWeekly.com would certainly not exist on the size and scale that it enjoys today. Nigel sadly passed away, following a brave battle with a cancer-related illness, in 2018. He was a highly valued colleague, and more importantly, an exceptional person to work with - his presence is sorely missed.
