Southern Sportive have teamed up with Torq Fitness as their nutrition partner for 2012. With nine events during this year Southern Sportive with Torq will be supplying energy drinks at the start as well as at every check point including the sale of various energy products during the course of each event. First to be rolled out at the Joker sportive on April 1.
Forest of Dean Sportive
Chain Reaction Cycles have announce that entries are now open for the Vitus Forest of Dean Classic Sportive. With the events continued growth organisers have had to search for new a new home in the shape of New Monmouth show grounds. The event in its seventh year will take place on May 6 and will be able to take entries of up to 2000 riders.
Scott Great British Sportive Series
A new Sportive series backed by Scott has been launched. The Scott Great British Sportive series has two events, The LongLeg Sportive on 6th May and The Arrow Sportive on 17 June. Both events supply a “secure key drop and baggage” service which is said to be the safest place to leave any luggage.
Scottish Sportive Series
The new three part series will include last years popular the Graeme Obree Classic to be held on Sunday July 29, the new event called the ‘Whisky Trail’ will take place on June 29 and the first of the year The’King of the Mountains’ Robert Millar Sportive, who is arguably the best stage rider that UK has produced.
Great Manchester Cycle
Rebecca Romero current Olympic Individual Pursuit Champion and Tony Audenshaw from Emmerdale, will be joining the many cyclists on a newly launched urban closed road cycle in Manchester. Held in June this year this ride will be based on a 13mile closed road circuit, the perfect way for any newbie to the sportive scene to get safe introduction.
Registration has now opened for the new Bike Bath weekend. Six rides to choose from over Saturday and Sunday which cover 30, 60 or 100miles, meaning you could possibly cover 200miles for the weekend. Proceedings will be launched on the evening of Friday June 22, which includes celebrity guest speakers and book signing at the Bath Pavilion.
London to Paris
Children’s charity Action Medical Research is currently offering teams of four or more riders a 60 per cent discount off the sign-up fee for its London to Paris bike ride this summer. Running from July 18 – 22, there are four 300-mile routes to choose from, including two new options for 2012.
The revolution is still taking entries for the London event taking place on May 19 weekend. This two day event will include an over night stop, a lap of the historic Herne Hill Velodrome and a ride on parts of the Olympic route to be staged later this year.
As well as fully featured event to take part in, riders on the April 1 Joker Sportive in Salisbury are set to get a nice package of goodies too. Added to this, all rider photographs from the event will be available to download for just £1 each, with every penny raised going to a local charity.
Spotlight on….. Sandown Cyclone Sportive
Surrey roads have been hugely popular with the Olympic road race now in sight and the ever growing likeliness of seeing a star gracing our local training routes (the British girls were out riding the route last Friday). It really hasn’t been a better time to get out on the bike in Surrey, so why not use the Sandown Cyclone Sportive as a excuse to visit this part of the world and take in some of the famous hills in the sounding area.
Taking place on Sunday April 22 this sportive open to all will also enable riders entry into the Road Cycling Show, which is in association with Cycling Weekly starting on Saturday April 21 to Sunday April 22.
All three routes start within Sandown Park, Esher and head out towards Cobham. The Epic (81miles) and the Standard (66miles) take in the hard 20 per cent climb of White Down, as featured in Simon Warren’s book 100 Climb, whilst the fun 35.5mile route takes in the best of Surrey in a compact route.
