The man whose vision led to the creation of North Kent's £9.7 million Cyclepark

When the £9.7 million Gravesend Cyclepark in North Kent opens next March - at 43 hectares it will be the biggest facility of its kind in Europe, claim Kent County Council - the sport will owe a huge debt of thanks to the former first category roadman whose idea it was, Tony Mack, a retired engineer and a member the Gravesend CC.

"I was concerned by the growth of traffic making roads unsuitable for cyclists," says Mack. "The circuit at Fowlmead near Dover is too far away. This area was crying out for its own cycling facility."

Keith Bingham joined the Cycling Weekly team in the summer of 1971, and retired in 2011. During his time, he covered numerous Tours de France, Milk Races and everything in-between. He was well known for his long-running 'Bikewatch' column, and played a pivotal role in fighting for the future of once at-threat cycling venues such as Hog Hill and Herne Hill Velodrome.
