Reigning national hill-climb champion Gunnar Gronlund (RST-Trigon) continued the build up to his title defence when he won the Stocksbridge CC event on the 860-yard Pea Royd Lane course in South Yorkshire.

Gronlund won by less than four seconds over the same course that was used for the national championships in 2009, with Lee Baldwin (Buxton CC) second and James Allen (Sheffrec CC) third.

Meanwhile, Gronlund’s rival for this year’s championship, Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy CT) continued his great winning run when he took victory in the Kingston Wheelers event on Leith Hill in Surrey.

Pettinger clocked 3-33.80 to win the 1,570-yard event convincingly by more than 20 seconds over Pedal Heaven RT’s Allan Ridler, while Joe Harris (GS Henley) was third.

Also continuing a great run of victories was Karl Denton (Blumilk.com) who won the Ferryhill Wheelers event on Stang hill near Langthwaite in North Yorkshire.

Denton’s time of 9-34 for the 2.33-mile climb was 13 seconds faster than runner-up Josh Teasdale (EFC Omega Pharma), while Shaun Tyson (Adept Precision RT) was another 19 seconds off the pace over the event which featured 833-feet of climbing and an average gradient of 6.8 per cent.

Yorkshire Road Club staged their two-stage climbs near Eccup in West Yorkshire on Saturday, and victorious in both was Witham Wheelers’ James Coleman.

He was six seconds quicker over the opening 1.4-mile climb of Weardley Bank, while Otley CC’s Sam Ward took second, six seconds back, and Robert Ormrod (Ilkley CC) was another four seconds off the pace in third.

It was the same 1-2-3 for the second stage on Weardley Lane, as well as the overall GC which Coleman won by 17 seconds.

Coleman also tasted two victories on Sunday, where he won the Bridlington CC and Scarborough Paragon hill-climbs of Flixton and Hackness respectively.

In time trialling, overall series winner Jeff Jones (Drag2Zero.com) won the eighth and final round of the Rudy Project National Series near Devizes in Wiltshire on Saturday.

Jones, 41, clocked 1-31-03 to win the 41-mile event by exactly three minutes from Somerset’s Dean Robson, while Julia Shaw (Drag2Zero.com) was fastest woman over the 20.5-mile course with 48-48.

Those results mean that Jones and Shaw win the men’s and women’s competitions respectively.

Elsewhere, Sam Barker (Planet X) was victorious in the Lee Valley CC 30 at Ugley in Essex.

He clocked 1-07-06 for the event, winning by just over a minute and a half from La Fuga-Sigma Sport rider Niall Digby, while Dean Lubin (Ciclos Uno) was third.

And over ten miles, Jon Simpkins (Drag2Zero.com) won Coventry RC’s event at Princethorpe with 20-27, while Julian Ramsbottom won the VTTA North Midlands event at Ranby in Nottinghamshire with 19-50.
