British time trial preview (Oct 1-2)
With four wins in the series already under his belt, Matt Bottrill (I Ride RT) will be aiming to make it five when he rides the penultimate round of the Rudy Project National Time Trial Series this Saturday.
The seventh round of the series, Saturday's event is run off on a 29.8-mile course at Willoughby-on-the Wolds in Nottinghamshire. The women, veterans, juniors and disabled race covers 14.9 miles.
Bottrill already has the series victory wrapped up and can't be caught, so perhaps the more interesting clash will be ahead him on the road with Chippenham and District Wheelers' Jeff Jones aiming to climb back up to second spot.
Having ridden one less round than Scott Walker (I Ride RT) and Dean Fuller (Team Swift) who are both ahead of him in the table, Jones should take back second place on Saturday.
Also one to watch is Sigma Sport's Wouter Sybrandy, who is the only man to have beaten Bottrill in the National Series this season when he beat him by more than a minute in round five, which was over a similar 33-mile course at Great Witley in Worcestershire.
In the women's event, Team Jewson's Michelle King should move up to the top of the table on Saturday when she rides her fifth event, while current leader Lynn Hamel (Herbalife-Wheelbase) is also down to ride.
While many will still be tackling time trials this weekend, for several others the hill-climbs season is now in full swing, and this weekend sees many of the most popular events on the calendar taking place.
Saturday's big event is in West Yorkshire at the Otley CC two-stage, where Tejvan Pettinger (Sri Chinmoy CT) will once again be looking to beat former national champion Matt Clinton (Mike Vaughan Cycles).
Oxford-based Pettinger beat him twice in last weekend's Warwickshire Road Club two-stage, and Clinton will be out for revenge on the climbs of Guise Cliff and Norwood Edge, which are both around 1,400 yards.
However, both will do well to keep a close eye on international mountain bike ace Gunnar Gronlund (RST Racing Team) who comfortably won the Weaver Valley hill-climb last weekend. Also riding at Otley is David Clarke (Endura).
In Gear-Quickvit rider Peter Tadros will be busy this weekend, as he tackles three hill-climbs in the south of England.
He is last off in Kingston Wheelers' event on Leith Hill in Surrey, with Tadros tackling the 1,570-yard climb at 12noon.
He will then travel to Sussex where he tackles the 1,672-yard Steyning Bostal in the Sussex CA climb last that afternoon.
And the following morning, he is down to ride Wigmore CC's event on Hollingbourne Hill.
Elsewhere, there is a good field for the Fibrax-Wrexham Road Club event on the Horseshooe Pass at Llangollen, which covered two miles, 585 yards.
Former National Champions James Dobbin (Adeo Cadence) and Mark Lovatt (Planet X) are down to ride, as is Team Raleigh's Richard Handley.
Meanwhile, Sunday should see a close battle for victory in the Veterans TTA (London and Home Counties) 25-mile time trial at Marlow in Buckinghamshire.
High Wycombe CC's Adam Topham and I Ride Racing Team's Scott Povey look set to fight it out for top spot.
