Tour de France organiser Amaury Sport Organisation is one of six organisations shortlisted in the bidding for the London Festival of Cycling in 2013, the Mayor of London announced on Friday.
ASO brought the Tour de France Grand Depart to London in 2007, which attracted huge numbers of spectators to the city and was hailed an organisational success.
Shortlisted organisations have until mid-April to submit a formal proposal, and the final selection will be announced prior to the Games this summer.
“The high quality of the shortlisted organisations is a clear demonstration of their confidence in London’s ability to host a world class cycle festival,” said Mayor of London Boris Johnson.
“With the Games just around the corner, the investment to date is already paying off, and my team is hard at work developing the events that will help us showcase our great city to the world for many years to come.”
The event, to be held in August 2013, will be the first large event to use the London 2012 legacy cycling facilities in the Olympic Park when it reopens after the Games. It will include an eight-mile family ride on closed roads around the capital and a 100-mile mass-participation ride with elite-level race based on the road race circuit around Surrey.
The Mayor of London is hoping that over 100,000 cyclists will take part in the festival as a whole.
The shortlist as released by the Mayor of London is as follows:
Amaury Sport Organisation - owners of the Tour de France
IMG - owners of the London Triathlon and the Etape Caledonia and Etape Pennines closed road cycling events
Limelight Sports and Participate Sport (Joint Venture) – Limelight Sports are sub-contractors for the Olympic Road Cycling Race and Participate Sport are the organisers of Cycletta, the women only bike ride series
London & Surrey Cycling Partnership – comprising the organisers of the London Marathon (who are responsible for the sporting content of the Olympic Marathons, Paralympic Marathon, and Olympic Race Walks) and SweetSpot Group (organisers of the Tour of Britain)
