Boonen to appeal against Tour de France ban

Tom Boonen is set to file a law suit against the decision to exclude him from this year's Tour de France.

Tour organisers Amaury Sport Organisation announced on Thursday (June 18) that Boonen would not be welcome at the race due to his second out-of-competition positive test for cocaine in less than a year.

A statement was issued by Boonen's Belgium-based Quick Step team on Friday confirming the action: "Quick Step and Tom Boonen have decided to use all legal means possible to oppose this decision."

Boonen was banned from riding in last year's Tour de France as a result of failing a test for cocaine in May 2008.
