Starting in France and finishing in Italy, stage 17 could be more important than the profile would suggest.
The mid-stage challenges of the Col de Montgenèvre and then the first-category climb up to Sestrière will split the peloton up into several groups, many of which should come back together on the 45km descent off the rarely-visited Italian ski-resort.
For the second day running, a second-category climb positioned shortly before the finish could light the touch paper, particularly as the Côte de Pramartino's descent is both twisting and technical.
