Since launching the C40 back in 1994, Colnago has used the same objectives in producing its high-end carbon C-series bikes: stronger, lighter, stiffer. It launched the C59 in 2010, and since then there has opened up significant room for improvement.

Even so, rather than starting afresh, Colnago wisely drew on past knowledge and used the C59 as the platform for this, its latest race machine, the C60.

You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a case of the emperor’s new clothes, as at first glance the new model looks similar to the old one. However, the C60 is a complete overhaul of the C59, and its ThreadFit82.5 BB initially made us take a sharp intake of breath.

Colnago-OFWH-particolare-02
This wider BB flows into the down tube and the tapered asymmetric seat tube, allowing for the increase in carbon tubing size. Colnago says wall thickness has been reduced and manipulated to increase lateral stiffness and strength without adding weight.

The firm also claims that a new construction process now allows
the previously rounded head tube to connect to other tubes using the same ‘star section’ as the main tubes. Apart from the junction’s slightly more harmonious appearance, the main benefit is internal — doing away with
an internal rib reinforcement in the
down tube allows more control over the wall thickness.

“The frame is now stiffer, and its fine details classily finished”

With much of the frame, including the chainstays, gaining stiffness, it’s down to the seatstays to offer greater comfort. As we often say, the devil’s in the detail, and the finer updated elements such as the reworked dropouts and reinforced bottle cage mounts are classily finished, as we’ve come to expect from Colnago.

Archetypally ‘Colnago’ is the sheer number of sizes and paint schemes (a few or which are below) available in either electronic-only or shifting option. It’s a potential minefield, so it’s a good job it’s only available through your local bike shop, who will help you narrow down the choice when selecting the right £3,499.95 frameset for you.

ThreadFit82.5
Further inspection revealed our concerns about ThreadFit82.5 were unwarranted, as the patented hybrid threaded option matches BSA threaded style cups with a Pressfit 86.5 bottom bracket axle, so you get the best of both worlds: an oversized yet threaded bottom bracket, so no more creaking bottom brackets. Sounds great to us.
