British time trial round-up (June7-8): News and results from around the UK
A personal best 1-43-12 saw Paul Gamlin (Northover VT) improve on second and third places in the two previous years with victory in Finsbury Park CC’s 50 on the Bedfordshire-based F1 course, beating Russell Kober (Hainault RC) by a minute.
Rick Froud (Alton CC) prevailed in Reading CC’s 50 at Bentley, clocking 1-53-37 ahead of Phil Watts (North Hampshire RC), 1-54-33, with both starting in the first quarter of the field.
Peter Garnett (Swindon RC) took the honours in Western TTA’s 100-mile event at Cirencester in 4-11-21, also leading the winning team, with later starter Dean Edwards (Worcester St Johns CC) defying a rising wind to take second in 4-14-55.
Daniel Barnett (www.drag2 zero) enjoyed a winning first appearance on the 25-mile Seagrave-Six Hills course, clocking 52-42 for victory in Leicester Forest CC’s event ahead of Nick Cave (Lutterworth Cycle Centre RT), posting a course best 53-26, on an afternoon when a number of the seeded favourites failed to start.
The Team Swift trio of Andy Jackson, Jon Surtees and Joel Wainman sliced 41 seconds off the National 10-mile team record in the club’s time trial on Wednesday evening.
Team Swift already held the record with Wainman and Jackson teaming up with Ali Wareham in 2013, but their record was beaten by the 2014 trio who posted a combined team time of 56-16 in round two of the Team Swift 10 League.
Jackson, from Leeds, covered the V718 course at South Cave in East Yorkshire in 18-37 to take the solo win by five seconds from Surtees, from Tattersall in Leeds.
Manchester Wheelers’ Scott Burns took third with 18-52, but just five seconds back in fourth was Hull rider Joel Wainman who clocked 18-57 to finish as third man in the record-breaking team.
On Saturday, Surtees and Wainman teamed up with another Leeds-based rider, Simon Beldon, in winning the Stocksbridge CC Three-up 256 at Hatfield Woodhouse in South Yorkshire. They clocked 52-15 to win by almost three minutes.
James Trenchard (Godric CC) was over a minute clear of his closest rival in Plomesgate CCs 25 on a sporting course at Tunstall, in Norfolk.
Rob Pears (Procycling Magazine RT), 40-50, was 42 seconds clear of runner-up Ben Anslie (Cadence RT) in Somer Valley CC’s 19-mile test over a circuit based on Bruton, Somerset.
David McGaw (Cambridge CC) was a clear winner of Ely & District CC’s 10 with a course record 21-11; Nick Malins (4T+ Velo Club) led the way in the 7Oaks Tri 10 in 21-16; and Jim Boyle led a 1-2 for Cherry Valley RT in Witham wheelers 10 as he clocked 21-36 to win by 21 seconds from Ian Dalton.
