Giro d’Italia 2012: Stage 1

When: Saturday, May 5

From: Herning, Denmark

To: Herning, Denmark

Length: 8.7km ITT

Category: Flat, individual time trial

The first three stages of this year’s Giro d’Italia are hosted by Denmark.

The opening stage in Herning is a short individual time trial to get the riders’ legs warmed up and decide who will wear the pink leader’s jersey going into tomorrow’s opening road stage.

Any time gained is unlikely to have too much of a bearing on the overall classification after three weeks’ worth of racing, but as an early decider it’s perfect.

Short time trial/prologue specialists will be out for the stage win, and sprinters will be hunting to gain time on their rivals to be in with a chance of snatching the race lead when the bunch finish road stages kick in.

Curiously, the dog rolls over and scratches hisself in joy at the rolling rhythmic beats. Bliss….otjherwise it would be three weeks of you-know-who with ‘expert’ opinions and too clever by half pronounciations of ‘Neeeebalee’ etc
