Giro d’Italia 2013: Stage 11

When: Wednesday, May 15

From:
Tarvisio (Cave del Predil)

To: Vajont (Erto e Casso)

Length: 182km

Category: Medium mountains

The Giro d’Italia will visit the Vajont for the first time in honour of the dam disaster victims 50 years ago.

The stage covers Sella Ciampigotto midway and descends to the valley that was washed away in a ‘wave of death’ on October 9, 1963. Nearly 2,000 people died when a landslide caused the Vajont Dam to overflow. Villages such as Longarone were wiped out. The remaining residents were evacuated, but later returned. Some of them and their descendants will be on hand to see the Giro climb past the dam.

The road climbs 11.4km to the finish in the Erto e Casso municipality and passes the dam 7.2km up. After a GC sort-out yesterday, the big riders will watch each other, and an outsider will likely be able to zip clear in the final downhill metres.

Culture

Cheese and cold cuts rule in this mountain town. The best way is to sample it all by heading out for an aperitivo at 7pm. Order a prosecco white sparkling wine and ask the waiter to bring you un piatto con tutto – a bit of everything. Make sure you try the Schiz cheese and speck ham of Cadore too.
