Giro d’Italia 2013: Stage 18

When: Thursday, May 23

From:
Mori

To: Polsa

Length: 20.6km

Category: Mountain time trial

Giuseppe Olmo won the Giro’s first uphill TT to Terminillo, Mussolini’s mountain, 77 years ago. Gino Bartali finished 35 seconds back and continued his run to Grand Tour win numero uno.

At 20km, it had more to do with this year’s mountain TT than the 12.65km version that featured two years ago. Contador won but was later disqualified and the win went to Nibali – in other words, it was a day for mountain men. This longer run, with a 10 per cent max and 5.2 per cent average gradient is more manageable. Wiggins showed in Paris-Nice’s Col d’Èze – half the distance, but with similar gradients – he can manage himself just fine.

The road bends and rises to 1,205m above Lake Garda. The eventual Giro winner will keep it steady here in anticipation of the final two mountain days.

Culture

La Cucina Trentina features mountain food, a lot of polenta and strudel, with German-sounding names. We recommend strangolapreti: spinach and cheese gnocchi that translates as “priest stranglers”. Follow it up with apple strudel. Wash it down with a Marzemino red wine.
