Alberto Contador may have found himself a new team. Spanish Formula One star Fernando Alonso is reported to be setting up a new Spanish cycling team, backed by his former motor racing sponsors.

According to an article in Spanish paper Marca, Contador has been approached by Alonso and has expressed great interest in the project.

Contador won’t be free to join any new team just yet, as he’s still signed to Astana until the end of the season. A move to a Spanish team, built around the triple grand tour champion would suit him perfectly.

The Spaniard’s relationship with Astana team-mate Lance Armstrong and the squad’s boss, Johan Bruyneel, has been the subject of constant speculation since Armstrong announced his participation in this year’s Tour de France.

Two-times Formula One world champion Alonso visited the Tour’s first stage in Monaco, where the riders rode around part of the infamous Monaco Grand Prix circuit as part of the opening time trial.
