STAGE 14

Date: Saturday, July 16 2011

From/to: Saint-Gaudens to Plateau de Beille

Distance: 168.5km

Type: High mountains

Impact on jerseys

Yellow 5/5

Green 1/5

Polka dot 5/5

All the previous winners on the Plateau de Beille have gone on to win the Tour that same year, and we wouldn’t be surprised if that record continues in 2011.

The peloton will tackle a mamouth six climbs along the 168.5km route, the first of which, the Col de Portet-d’Aspet, is featured just two days short of the 16th anniversary of Fabio Casartelli’s death on its twisting descent.

The brutality of the hills will play a key role in the result; the final climb is 2km longer than the L’Alpe du Huez at 15.8km, and averages an energy-sapping 7.9%.
