While BMC’s SLR01 has been serving Team BMC well over the past couple of years – it’s won two World Champs under both Cadel Evans and Philippe Gilbert – it appears there was still room for improvement.

This new SLR01 frameset has grown in size, with a bigger down tube and a noticeably enlarged seat tube to bottom bracket area. We also noticed a complete re-jig of the chainstays, an asymmetric design means that the left is wider and lower than the right, which has to take account of the drivechain.

It’s not just about making things bigger as some of the smaller parts have had sections machined away, cleverly allowing BMC to grab a few grams back that way.

With what little Dura-Ace 9000 there is kicking about, the mechanics have chosen to put it on his number one road bike, of course with the seemingly ever-present SRM.

Rolling on a set of Shimano C50s before a sprint stage, the American’s size 56 didn’t have an issue with meeting UCI minimum weight limit according to the team mechanic – unlike Cadel’s Giro version, which (with a set C25’s) had to have weight added to meet the 6.8kg limit
