Despite Tejay van Garderen’s bike being a couple of years old Team BMC are still fettling the set-up and have obviously taken the bike and rider to the windtunnel as there are a couple of alterations since last we saw it.
As opposed to Cadel Evans, who likes a low front end, Tejay has his 3T base bars elevated above the height of the top tube with the back of the stem covered so that it flows more smoothly into the top tube.
A custom carbon set-up, the ‘stem’ itself is relatively short. The arm rests are in an elevated position, a clear giveaway to the windtunnel testing and to optimise the position a custom seatpost with a monster layback has been made – it looks very slick but up close you’ll spot a 13mm bolt poking out of the top, this is the main adjustment point.
Proving yet again that 9000 series Di2 is in short supply this TM01 is running the ‘old’ 7970 version with 7800 SRM cranks and a pretty sizeable 55 tooth outer ring ready for the team time trial.
To try and keep the electronics clean and tidy the control box has been mounted on the rear of the bars, the markings that the team mechanics made to get the drill points exactly square still in evidence.
Shimano wheels are part of the sponsorship package and here van Garderen gets the latest version with the wider Pro Textreme disc and a C75 front wheel.
Featuring the latest aero bottle from Elite, the aptly named Chrono CX, it’s also benefited from windtunnel time as it’s been mounted lower on the downtube with a custom bracket, so that it fills in the gap between the down and seat tubes.
