Tour of Flanders

The Tour of Flanders (Sunday, April 6 2014) holds a special place in the heart of all Flemmish people. The Spring classic that takes in the cobbled climbs of the Flemmish Ardennes is part of the nation’s identity. The split between northern (Flanders) and southern (Walloon) Belgium is deep seated in the country’s past running through its history, culture and politics. The Tour of Flanders is undeniably Flemmish, and a sporting event that shows off the region to the world.

Flanders, the Ronde Van Vlaanderen, attracts a certain type of rider, one with power, good bike handling skills and guts. While the short, steep, cobbled climbs force a selection of the strongest riders, getting to the bottom of them in a good position, without having expended too much energy, is the key to winning. Fighting for position on the narrow, often windswept, concrete block roads is a skill only few riders master, and is why historically, the Belgians do so well in this race. That is how they’ve ridden since they were juniors.

The route change that came in in 2012 was a disaster for many Flanders fanatics as it took the climbs of the Muur and the Bosberg out of the race. These two climbs have shaped the result more than any others. The race will, however, maintain its popularity even with more tinkering to the route that now sees the race finish in the beautiful town of Oudenaarde.
