This shoe from high-end Swiss company Suplest seamlessly blends retro and modern. Seamless is the word, because the upper is made from a single piece of supple synthetic microfibre to eliminate lumps and pressure points.

The Suplests have a high, roomy toe box and the heel is held tight. My narrow feet need most of the ratchet cranked up tight over the foot and because the microfibre ‘gives’ like leather, the upper has creased a little bit next to the first Velcro strap. They are possibly best suited to a slightly wider foot, but the Streetracers are still fabulously comfortable.

The sole is all carbon, wrapping high up the instep. It is super-rigid but I have not suffered any arch ache – a risk if the moulding doesn’t suit your shape.

Ventilation is firmly old school and comes via a cluster of small holes in the front and sides of the toebox – it’s not really enough for the hottest days as the microfibre is not breathable, but quite enough to give your feet a cold shower on a wet day.

After about six months’ daily use the Suplests’ upper looks as good as new. The glossy black surface wipes clean and there is minimal visible stitching to discolour. Underneath, however, the heel grips are already wearing and it’s a pity they’re not replaceable, Sidi-style.

Verdict

Overall, the Suplests have a distinctive style and the technology to go with it. Weight at 327g for the size 43 is pretty good and the price for a top-end shoe is not ridiculous either.
