On paper, 3T’s Accelero wheelset looks perfect for those wishing to use their ‘best’ wheels throughout the summer months and not just for events.
Bucking the trend for full carbon clinchers, the Accelero’s 43mm-deep carbon rims are structural, rather than just an aero fairing, and bonded to an aluminium braking surface.
Braking performance was generally good but we did experience vibration for the first few miles and, after a short period of bedding in, we could still feel a slight vibration under exceptionally hard braking too.
The 3T rims are noticeably wide at 23mm and lend themselves to use with a wider tyre for better aerodynamics, comfort and rolling. Combined with 25c Vredestein tyres, comfort was surprisingly good for such a stiff wheelset.
Brake rub was not an issue while sprinting or climbing, and the wheels track very well when tackling corners at speed.
The biggest downside to these wheels is their weight. While they roll well once up to speed, it takes quite some effort to get them going — somewhat ironic considering their name. With this weight noticeable when climbing, they are really best suited to flatter events or training.
